This documentary is exactly as wild as it sounds. Survival of the Fiddlist dives into the story of Randy Crouch – described as the “original psychedelic grunge hillbilly fiddle player from outer space,” which honestly feels accurate once you start watching. The film follows his life and legacy as a genre-destroying Oklahoma musician who blended psychedelic rock, grunge, and old-school Appalachian fiddle into something completely his own.
It’s part music history, part counterculture deep dive, and part “how did this guy exist and I’m just now hearing about it?” Beyond the music, the film explores the unconventional lifestyle, rebellious spirit, and community that grew around his sound — making it as much about freedom and creativity as it is about fiddles and feedback.
The screening is a partnership between the River Valley Film Society and the Ozark Mountain Music Festival and previously screened at the 2025 Fort Smith International Film Festival. If you like your art a little weird, a little loud, and very unapologetic, this one’s worth carving out an afternoon for.
